What an amazing and utterly wonderful day it was . We got a message from Sean Morris of Byron Bay Eco Charters last night asking us if we’d like to come out whale watching today. Well that’s a no brainer, if you’d read our review about these guys, you’d understand that Yoko and I jumped at the chance. Sure it meant finishing late last night and getting up early today, but after my last trip with these guys, I wasn’t prepared to miss this for anything. Last time we went out, we had a ball, saw heaps of whales and well, it was a blast. But we were in for something very special in Byron Bay today. Even the skipper Mark, a pro fisherman of many years experience said he’d never seen anything quite like this. What happened today is apparently rare. The boat was mugged by two humpback whales. Sounds negative, but it’s not. The term mugging refers to the rare occasion when whales approach the boat for a really close up look. They come so close that the boat can’t move. It wouldn’t be safe for the whales. So we are taken into their company and interacted with closely until they are finished and once again release the boat at their discretion. Hence the phrase ‘mugging’ it is a truly extraordinary experience, and it touched the lives of all on board today. Re the rest of the update, well yes the swell is good and the waves are better. But this one’s mainly about those two magnificent creatures, which took us into their company. Then released us again at their leisure, unharmed yet in some way changed forever. To Sean and the crew at Byron Bay Eco Charters, what can we say? Other thank you guys so much for the opportunity to be out there and be a part of what went down, .
