Done & Dusted, . Ok spring is renowned for wild and unpredictable weather. But this is ridiculous for those who haven’t seen the news today, reside in another country or perhaps live in a small dark dust proof box. Almost the entire eastern seaboard of Australia was enveloped by a massive dust storm today. The frontal system responsible carried incalculable amounts of red soil from the South Australian desert and mixed it with valuable farmland topsoil dried from the drought. The strong winds then turned it into a moving wall of dust four hundred kilometres wide and thousands of kilometres long. Nowhere escaped, including us here in Byron Bay. I’ve seen dust storms before; after all we do inhabit the driest populated continent on the planet. But I’ve never seen anything like this, this was actually kind of spooky, and we didn’t get hit anywhere near as hard as our buddies down Sydney way. Anyway you know what we’re like in Byron Bay today. You could describe us as extremely dedicated, or just plain stupid. But dust or not, we grabbed an asthma inhaler, wrapped the gear in towels, Douglas Adams would have been proud, and went out to shoot regardless. After all that’s just the way we do things, .
