Leaping Tigers, . Isn’t it always the way, one sees the most extraordinary things when not pointing the lens in the right direction, and so it was in Byron Bay today. It was around lunchtime, the surf was small the sun was out, there were some very unaware learners in the lineup, and we were standing on the beach chatting when it happened. Only metres from the beginners something suddenly broke the water’s surface. For a split second methinks, hmm really big dolphin? But no, wrong shape, square head, white belly and squat but wide based pectoral fins. Anyway dolphins and whales don’t move that way. The beastie lurched straight up in a vertical motion until all three and half metres or more of it was out of the water. Almost doing a dainty pirouette on its tail it slapped down with a mighty splash as tried to do a U-turn in mid air and landed on its side. An amazing sight to see, but more amazing to me was that the punters in the water were utterly oblivious to the whole event. They simply failed to notice that a really big and obviously excited Tiger Shark had just leapt into the air right next to them. What can I say folks, pay attention, the whales at this time of year are beautiful, but they bring the big predators with them, .
