Sharks, A Dime A Dozen, . While waiting up at the lookout with the local crew to shoot the big Australia Day paddle race when we spotted the first shark swing up underneath the swimmers as it hugged the edge of the sandbank and casually cruised to the point in less than a metre of water, in Byron Bay today. Twas a reasonable size too, maybe 2.5 metres or so. While calling people out of the water, along came another, and then the next. It was the strangest Shark activity I’ve ever seen. Not a school and not all the same species either, just plain weird. There were at least three different breeds that I spotted. But really who can be sure? We counted more than fifteen of them although there may have been more, and they all did exactly the same thing. They came up from Main beach past the reef, over to The Pass, straight under the swimmers and hugged the point close to shore then headed over to Wategos. This went on for about an hour, not together, just one after the other. In My entire life of surfing I’ve never seen anything quite like it before. To me the interesting thing about shark sightings is always the comments from people afterwards. I always get to hear all sorts of stuff about how people say they’re not scared of sharks. Or that sharks aren’t interested in people. Well ok if you want to believe that, fine. I suspect that these folks may not have had a close encounter with a really big one yet. I have an old friend from New Zealand, who lost her left kidney and various other bits to a shark bite many years ago. Try telling her that sharks don’t attack people. For me, I respect them for what they are, a very beautiful, graceful and very large predator. When sharks are cruising the bay, I say give them room to move and stay out of their way,.
