And So We Wait, . As Tropical Cyclone Ului sits and spins about a thousand kilometres off the Mid Eastern Queensland coast, we can do little but sit & wait in Byron Bay today. Some are waiting for the swell, others are waiting to see if it’ll flood, and for those further up north it’s a waiting game to see where and when TC Ului will make landfall. You see although Ului has been downgraded from category 4 to a category 3, that’s cold comfort for those who lay in the path of the beast. I know, I’ve been in the direct path of a couple of such storms in my life, and although they turn on good surf on the fringe, it’s pretty damned spooky in the middle. We’ll be fine down here. Although we could see some serious swell, but up the coast, well category 3 still means winds up to 210km an hour and possibly a serious tidal surge to boot. We had a new moon just yesterday so the tides are already big. If Ului crosses the coast at high tide, it ain’t gonna be pretty for those folks, so let’s hope that’s not the case. In the mean time we started to see the beginnings of the swell in the bay today. It’s not so much bigger, but the wave periods much longer and the swell is thicker than it’s been. Already people are complaining of the strength of the current. So by all means surf it and have fun, but treat this swell with the respect it deserves, .
