Flare Ups,. It's usually about this time of year after a long hot summer and the constant pressure from travelling surfers that tolerance in the water drops and tempers can flare, and Byron Bay is no exception. Earlier this week a visitor attacked a local for a drop in on a two foot wave, he put the guy in a hammer lock pulled him under and actually attempted to drown him. Granted being burnt is bloody annoying. However nothing and I repeat nothing warrants an attempt on someone's life. Wake up people, this is surfing; it's a leisure activity, not a contact sport. If you want to play tough guy, then take up boxing and find out how tough you really are. Now here's some food for thought, if you're visiting some place and a local happens to do the wrong thing and drop in on you. Ask yourself why? Did I just arrive in town, paddled out, and try to take over like I own the place? Because that was definitely part of the equation with this incident, and it's not the first time that greed has triggered such incidents. Saddest part of this whole sordid story is this. In such a big crowd, apparently nobody came to the aid of the victim. If we don't bother to care for each other and show some support and respect, then we don't have much at all do we,.
