Where’s The Swell,. Yes folks those hot northerlies are back yet again and the swell is still small, in Byron Bay today. So where is the monsoonal weather, where’s the swell? Well here’s the deal so far. It’s all got to do with the SOI (Southern Oscillation Index) Right now it’s Neutral, i.e. not El Nino not la Nina, just neither. If we had La Nina it would be wetter with a higher number of tropical lows, possible cyclones and more swell. El Nino would be dry but with fewer tropical lows but more southern lows pushing some swell through. Neutral means what it says, neutral, there just isn’t that much going on. The good news is that we still could see swell from tropical lows or from down south. The bad news is it looks like we won’t break out of the neutral phase of the SOI before late autumn or early winter. In regards to swell, that means that whatever swell we get will be slightly smaller, shorter lived and the events will be fewer and farther between. This doesn’t mean we won’t get any cyclones of southern ocean swells. But it does mean that the chances of good consistent prolonged swells are less. This why the monsoonal conditions we usually expect at this time of year are yet to appear, .
