Jan 28 13 In Byron Bay Today’s Week In Review

Oswald Part II, . Oswald was forecast to either move back out to sea or hug the coast as a quick moving rain depression, in Byron Bay today. it did hug the coast, but it also stalled thanks to a massive high in the south. This has given the system time to feed and intensify from the easterly trade winds off TC Garry, and hey presto we’re getting flogged. That’s just the way it goes sometimes. We’ve had seriously high seas, with storm force winds and short period wind swell for days now. Sure it’s been big, but with no form whatsoever. This is because there’s a massive difference between seas and swell, a point that’s often ignored by those predicting waves. What we’ve had this long weekend is storm seas, and yet not really that much swell. The vast majority of the underlying swell from Oswald has actually been a NW swell. In other words it’s heading out into The Tasman rather than in to us. Swell that we want, but big seas is what we got. As far as clean swell is concerned, if we’re lucky, later this week we may see some decent easterly swell, but it won’t be coming off Oswald. It would actually come from the remnants of TC Garry over near The Cook Islands. Whatever pans out over the next few days, we sincerely hope that you’re all ok, .
