Shane Martinfs current addition to his portfolio is a striking series of various depictions of jellyfish. He has been delving deeply into a new Airbrush method, utilising the media of Acrylic & Resin on Aluminium.
Best known by the Byron bay locals as a professional fashion photographer, when Shanefs not on assignment for various glossy magazines and the like, you can find him surfing or painting. Shane has an intimate relationship with the airbrush spanning over three decades. His airbrush work has mainly been in the surfboard industry, producing stunningly surreal and strikingly powerful depictions of the perfect wave and idyllic locations. A graduate of The College of Art in Brisbane, in 1972, Shane began Airbrushing on surfboards for various companies on the Gold Coast, to save enough money to travel through the South Pacific, and onto the famed Artist Colony of Laguna Beach, California. Here he mastered advanced techniques using the Airbrush, attracting many commissions from some of Californiafs largest surfboard labels.
What can I say about Shane Martin? Transparency and personal honesty dictates I must disclose that Shane is one of my friends, and a pretty damn good one at that. Yet neither friendship nor favour will hold sway with In Byron Bay Todayfs editorial reviews. To allow otherwise would be foolhardy. As an artist myself, with many years of painting similar subject matters. I can say that I have the utmost respect and dare I say it, even reverence for Shanefs Work. Anyone involved in the arts knows that the oceanic environment is an extraordinarily difficult subject matter to portray. Yet Shanefs mastery of the airbrush and the new medium hefs working with brings forth a unique product where Photo Realism, meets surreal lighting and colour. This is paradoxically and extremely subtly layered over a romantic impressionism which lays almost tantalisingly out of reach to the naked eye. The end result being that those witnessing this work for the first time, literally go slacked jawed as they become transfixed by the hypnotic quality of Shanefs expertise. For me the bottom line with art has always been this, does it bring me joy to behold. Shanes work does that and more.
